BOARDING PROGRAM
Throughout its history, Horizons has offered a boarding
program to students who live outside Atlanta but are
seeking the advantages of our program. The invitation
to participate in our boarding program extends beyond
national borders to students on all continents of the
world. Students live in dormitory style rooms similar
to a college atmosphere. Four staff members live in
the same building with boarding students and provide
supervision and guidance.
|
| The boarding program uses a "family" approach.
Students and staff are responsible for cooking meals.
Students quickly learn those skills and attitudes necessary
for independent living but still are able to seek support
from adults. Students learn to live together and work
together. For international students involved in our boarding
program, there is the additional opportunity to improve
English skills as well as to experience various aspects
of American life |

INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY
Diversity is a concept long overdue in our society.
We need to get past the notion of "tolerance"
and supplant it with appreciation of differences. Horizons
School embraces diversity in areas such as race, religion,
and ethnicity. One example of this is through our program
for international students. International students comprise
about 30 percent of our high school population. Many
international students live on campus as part of our
boarding program while others reside in the greater
Atlanta area with families or extended families.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service has authorized
Horizons to grant visas (I-20s) to students from other
countries which grant permission to study in the United
States. Our program offers English as a second language,
preparation for TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language),
preparation and counseling for colleges and universities,
and tutoring. Students take a full course load and earn
a high school diploma.
In a very real way, international students are an integral
part of our curriculum. They provide first hand information
about other countries and other cultures. As American
education continues to seek a more global perspective,
we have the opportunity to experience this directly |

LOCAL RESOURCES
|
Horizons' location near the heart of a
major city puts it close to libraries, universities, museums,
businesses, parks, and many other resources. Rather than
duplicating these various facilities in miniature, the
school encourages students to reach out in their community
to use it for learning and enjoyment.
Parents and individuals volunteer their time and talents
to the school community through participation in committees,
school field trips and work projects. These contributions
offer a range of invaluable resources to enhance the overall
program of the school |
